Embracing Seasonal Transitions

Embrace the change of season through decluttering, clearing and re-arranging your space

The change of season is a synchronistic time to address clutter and refresh stagnant areas of the home. These cyclical transitions represent nature's cleansing, and the more we humans are able to remain in sync with nature, the better we feel. During the transition of summer to fall, nature releases excess heat that has accumulated throughout the summer. Temperatures begin to retreat, humidity begins to subside, the leaves and grass turn color as they adjust to the new yet familiar circumstances. Fall signals that the time to slow down is coming.

I often notice that my clients struggle with keeping the entry to their home clear especially during the summer months. With the hustle and bustle of summer schedules, travel and summer camps, gear and packages tend to accumulate. The entryway is your home's first and last impression, leaving an energetic and visual imprint both on the way in, and on the way out. Entryways should always be kept clear of clutter yet they are one of the top spaces to accumulate due to their transient nature.

Quick tips to refresh your entryway for Fall:

Store: If your family needs areas to store items like shoes or athletic gear, use concealed storage such as closed baskets, bins or cabinets.

Clean: Wipe down all surfaces to clean away any buildup of dust or moisture residue and usher in a symbolic “fresh start.” Clean underneath any furniture in the front entrance as this can be a place where energy becomes heavy and stagnant.

Rearrange: Move items displayed on the foyer furniture bringing in something new, and moving out something old. Rearranging breaks up stagnant energy and creates new focus points for attention and intention.

Refresh: Open windows and doors to switch out heavily recirculated air from full time air conditioning. Burn sage or palo santo to cleanse the space, setting an intention for the new season. Adding a candle with notes of sandalwood can help with grounding during the energetic shift of Fall where the air becomes drier and lighter and we can become prone to feeling more anxious or unsettled.

Seasonal transitions are a natural time to reflect and cleanse our bodies and our spaces. They present a pause, a moment to collect ourselves as we step back into long term routines and schedules. Transitions can bring with them a sense of melancholy or nostalgia for what we are leaving behind. With every transition there is an inevitable letting go of what was, in order to embrace what is and what will be. Clearing, rearranging and decluttering our external world is a practice that helps us to stay present and move through any uncomfortable sentiments that may accompany the change of season.

Look around your home, what area of your home could benefit from a refresh? Where has the clutter accumulated? Now is the time, the only way out…is through.
